Life's What You Make It - Make It Great

Hey guys and gals! I don't check in here too often anymore due to a multitude of reasons nor does my better half. When I do, it's sad to see what it has become. No interaction, hardly any of the old users left and although I see some new names there just doesn't seem to be much going on. Could I do more? I sure could, we all could. Am I willing to do more? At this point, not really. I just don't do much cooking anymore and when I do, I don't take pictures and post it. Why bother? No body even acknowledges it, lol.

I get it. The honeymoon may be over for many of us including myself. I belong to other forums and RARELY do I even post there either, but when I do, I do get some feedback and that's what drives a forum after all. If no one ever commented and had a discussion then why bother? I myself am guilty of not chiming in so the finger is pointed at me as well. I have been in a lull cooking wise for some time now and have had other things taking up my time. I still think the Keg is a fantastic tool and I have really enjoyed using it and even more than that, learning from the users here how to cook damn near anything on it! It's been invaluable. I have really meant to do more upon my return here, I had all the best intentions but it just hasn't panned out like I thought it would and I apologize for not being a contributing member like I once was.

It's not all doom and gloom though, I've got to meet some of you and have made friends that I hope to stay in touch with but I am hanging it up here. I wish nothing but the best for you all and Broil King. I hope the Keg makes it to it's next incarnation, the 6000! Tongue

Those that know me, know of the other places I visit, maybe I'll see ya there!

RG well said. I have never been an super user on here, but I have noticed the decline in activity. I do look on here daily and really enjoy some of the food Ideas i see. Hopefully this will continue. I think the Kamado style of cooker is finally gaining ground in the industry, but the pellet cookers and other "set and forget it" cookers are getting popular also. So who knows the fate of the Keg. I do believe the price of it going up and up and up is going to be the killer of it. When I bought my 4000, in the dead of winter, I got it from Ace on sale for $489. Now looking back I should of bought three of them. The Normal price at the time was $599 and their warehouse had 26 of them. I do know that the love people have for BBQ is going nowhere. Rest assured i will definitely be grilling something.

I agree; however, I'm sure you're FULLY aware there may be various OTHER reasons - besides what you've  mentioned - re. the decline/disinterest in the forum...

Let me add my 2cw to some of those other reasons for the forum's failings:
 The awfully leaky 5000 and the COMPLETE AWOL of BK  to chime in / help / suggest / offer any solution(s) or fixes does not help matters for any new forum members/BK 5000 owners!

Instead it seems BK are riding on the good nature and volunteering of various previous / present members who've generously spent their precious time troubleshooting and tried to offer different "patches".

Ugh.

Kamado Joe is probably gladly picking up more and more disillusioned ex-5000 owners.

You reap what you sow, I guess.

I am in the same boat as RG - not cooking as much and spending my online time elsewhere. That is life for forums - people come, participate, move on. No biggie.

This forum has always been dominated by a few members. Of the 165k posts, roughly a third were by only 10 posters, and roughly 20% by 5 posters. My recollection was that was true back in the early days of the forum as well (different top posters).

It is a funny forum in a number of ways. Always has been.

To be blunt, the forum is just too focused on BKK (of which there does not seem to be too many owners posting), which results in minimal content.  I can only look at so many pork butt pics! 

I post more at kamadoguru as even though it's got a more broad focus for brands, much of the content is relevant to all brands.

Also, the forum software there is so much more modern is a much nicer site to use.

I'm not moderating in an active role anymore, but still lurking.

We've discussed opening the forum up to a general Broil King forum.  I don't think it compromises the (pardon the off-brand reference) vision of the forum, but on the other hand, the Keg specific part of it should always remain a cornerstone of the operation.

Obviously expanding the community is a big part of the goal here...

Hi Rich,

At this point I don't think it matters to the few remaining people. With the exception of a handful of food posters (not necessarily keg related), there is very little participation. As a marketing tool I believe the forum has served it's purpose and it's almost counterproductive when it comes to promoting the Keg.

I don't think you will get much Keg participation. I gave up myself. On occasion I check to see if any of the old timers show up. I consider a lot of them to be friends, or rather kindred spirits. There are still some kind, selfless souls participating.

Moving forward with other product lines....

One of the main problems is the inability to subscribe new users. I believe there is something wrong with the methodology used by the system. I was not able to acquire a new account with a new email address. I could go into this, but I already did in good faith. You would need to address this issue in order to move forward, consider this free advice.

Personally, I think you might be better off using Reddit as a platform.

I was one of those BK advocates at first,  when the forum was quite active.  It was productive,  I had a lot to learn and eventually achieved enough experience to assist others.  But how many times can folks post pics of a steak? Hey, I grilled a steak! Hey, I grilled another steak.   Eventually the uniqueness dies off and it becomes a chore to take pictures of dinner.  It got to the point that unless I had something truly different to post, my participation dwindled.

I thought I'd get beck into it with the new cooker,  but there are what, perhaps a dozen active members? And the new cooker isn't a Keg,  so I don't feel right posting food I've cooked on it.  I've been more active over in the brethren forum lately but I notice not a lot of folks acutely post pics of cooks,  something I always looked forward to here - seeing new varieties of cooks done on the Keg.

Enough of my rambling.  I do check in from time to time and will continue to do so.

We all did get good!
I think the fact that nobody knew what they were doing back then was a key factor. Now days a lot of people can use a Kamado\Keg.
Does the bretheren forum have a Kamado section?  I guess I'll log on and find out.

KegGuyConnor moved on to a new gig.  So I suppose I am moderating in an active manner again... didn't expect that one.

Anyhoo - I'll look into the reddit thing - barrier to entry is far less complicated and presumably doesn't cost us much of anything.  (To update the board, our outside IT company has to do the nuts and bolts of it, and they're not bulletin board experts either, so the billable hours add up quickly.)

Happy 4th to everyone south of the border!

Reddit is a great place for many things, but unfortunately also still requires a separate upload system for graphical files.  So, along from having a reddit account to post (which is easy),  you will also have to create accounts on other systems to upload/attach pics.

If Broil King wants to maintain "control", they really just need to bit the bullet and do something professional, but (for example) kamadoguru.com already has a Keg section and is a fantastic forum software system, particularly since their update a while back.

Perhaps Broil King could throw some $$ their way and try promote more advertising there, get a section moderator etc.
