Title: Broil King Keg Pellet Burner
Post by: SmallBBQr on January 15, 2018, 12:45:23 PM
A little off topic, but I started to think about how great the keg could be as a pellet burner.  (Also, this forum is so dead, maybe start some sort of topic to give Uncle a rest!)

My first reason (and to be honest), is that I really don't think the Keg is a great kamado...(I don't want to get into that here...lots of other ways to discuss that), but I think it would make a GREAT pellet burner.

Highly insulated pot would allow use at any temp (and outside IN any weather/temp) and the 5000 design could probably keep the same general shape (manufacturing dies) but add some sort of temp controlled pellet feed pot into the front into a firepot in the bottom?

Just thought I would throw that out there....what do you think?

Very interesting...

It's funny because I just posted a Cold smoking topic using a pellet smoker http://forum.bigsteelkeg.com/index.php?topic=18308.0 (http://forum.bigsteelkeg.com/index.php?topic=18308.0) before even reading your topic...I can attest that the keg would be able to run on a pellet burner since I overshot my cold smoking temps using that little amazen pellet smoker...lol

Seriously though, I don't know about any external temp controlled pellet feeder on the market, but you just gave me an idea to try to fit the amazen smoker inside the Keg5000 ash drawer and see if it would shield a little more from the heat it generates...plus it would be easier to access if I need to add more pellets during a long cold smoke!! And I can probably leave a crack open in the ash drawer just to make sure the heat escapes from the bottom...

will be definitely trying this...

This is actually pretty cool...

Problem with trying to fit with the keg is you would have a big awkward assembly right in the front, but I still think it would be pretty bad ass if someone around here gave it a shot LOL   :D :D

Edit: pellet pro assembly on a WSM: https://youtu.be/HG8b3I9LqdA (https://youtu.be/HG8b3I9LqdA)

Saw your post Caveman.  I have the A-Maz-N cold smaller tray 5 X 8"  It won't fit in the 5000 ash tray, it's too deep.  I even ground down the steel cross bars underneath.  Too bad cause I thought that would be a great idea too.

Thanks K'man for testing that out...too bad, the fit would have been perfect in the ash drawer!
